6 Online Blackjack Strategies for Beating the Dealer
Thinking about making the move from slots to the tables? Blackjack is a great place to start. Or maybe you’ve already dabbled in Blackjack but you’re playing blindly, hitting and staying because you like or don’t like a certain number, or you’ve got a gut feeling. Whatever you’re doing, stop.
If you don’t know how to really play blackjack, you’ll definitely have a hard time winning.
Playing without knowing what you’re doing will get you nowhere, but with the right tips, the odds can be in your favor. So today, we’re bringing you five Blackjack strategy tips to help you bust the house. Read on and apply them at both the online or offline casino.
Tip #1: Double Down and Win Bigger
Did you know that the original bet you place during a hand of Blackjack doesn’t necessarily have to be your final bet? No matter what two cards you’re dealt, you’ll have the opportunity to double down. If you choose to double down, you’ll place a second bet identical to your first. The dealer will only hand you one card, so if you don’t like it, you don’t have the opportunity to hit again. Doubling down is beneficial when your first two cards add up to 9, 10 or 11 because a 10 or a face card will get you to 21 or close to it (and hitting an Ace on a 9 or 10 is also a great outcome). When the dealer has a bust card, like a 5 or 6, doubling down is an even more beneficial strategy.
Tip #2: Profit from Soft Hands
When you’re dealt an Ace and a second card, you’re sitting with two possible hands. That’s because the Ace can be 11 or 1, whichever number works best in your favor. These are called soft hands and you can play them to your advantage by betting smartly. Here’s a quick look at what to do depending on what your two cards are:
- Ace with 2 or 3 -> Double if dealer has a 5 or 6, or hit against any other dealer card
- Ace with 4 or 5 -> Stay if dealer has 4-6, or hit against any other card
- Ace with 6 -> Stay if dealer as 3-6, or hit against any other card
- Ace with 7 -> Stay if dealer has 2, 7, or 8, double if the dealer has 3-6, or hit against any other dealer card
- Ace with 8 or 9 -> Stay
- Ace with 10 -> You’ve got a Blackjack! Congrats!
Tip #3: Split Aces and Eights
Notice how we didn’t mention what to do when your other card is an Ace? That’s because hitting two Aces deserves its own section. When you’re dealt a pair of Aces, always split them. It doesn’t matter what they dealer is holding. You’re essentially sitting with 2 or 12, both of which aren’t great hands. Splitting the two cards ups your chances of getting 21 on both hands. When you split them, you’ll separate the two cards into two separate hands. The second hand will require an additional bet and you’ll receive a second card on both hands. If you’re dealt eights, apply the same strategy and split them.
Tip #4: Never split fours, fives, and tens
Just as there are two hands that you should always split, there are three hands that you should never split. If you’re dealt tens, keep them as is. You’ve got 20, which is a fantastic hand. Splitting them would be foolish. If you’re dealt fives, you’re better off doubling down since your hand is 10. If you’re dealt fours, it’s much better to hit. Splitting them would mean that you’ve got two potentially weak hands.
Tip #5: Tip Take Insurance…or don’t
There’s no better feeling than being dealt an Ace, especially when the second card that follows is a 10. But when the dealer gets that Ace instead of you, it’s not as fun. That’s what insurance is for: a side bet you can make whenever the dealer’s showing an ace that can help you possibly cut your losses. With insurance, if the dealer ends up getting Blackjack, you’ll break even instead of losing it all. Most Blackjack experts will tell you that insurance is a sucker’s bet. And while that might be partially true, losing the hand because you didn’t take insurance definitely hurts.
